Many adults feel Tae Kwon Do is a great activity for their children. They appreciate the self-discipline and self-esteem it instills, as well as it being a safe and productive way to burn off extra energy. Why not Tae Kwon Do for adults, too? Couldn’t we all use more self-discipline? Wouldn’t the ability to focus intently under pressure be valuable? Could you use a little more energy?

There are many reasons why adults practice Tae Kwon Do.

Fitness

Tae Kwon Do‘s exercises combine both physical and mental challenges. Though beginners start at a fairly slow pace, it is possible to progress to a point where you burn several hundred calories in an hour’s workout. In addition to aerobic conditioning, Tae Kwon Do enhances flexibility, strength and coordination.

As you progress, you also learn increasingly complex techniques and combinations of movements, which not only are mentally stimulating, but keep Tae Kwon Do interesting.

One need not be athletically skilled to study Tae Kwon Do. Even people with serious physical limitations can become proficient at Tae Kwon Do. Age is no barrier, either.

Focus

For many students, the mental discipline acquired through Tae Kwon Do is the main reward. It is good for handling stress and controlling  tempers, even in difficult job situations.

Precision is fundamental in Tae Kwon Do. As students progress, they must be able to execute basic techniques more quickly and with sharper accuracy. It is essential to be able to relax and focus at the same time.

This ability can be carried over into many life situations. Because Tae Kwon Do is hard, daily work becomes easier.

Self-Defense

Within a few days after starting Tae Kwon Do, students learn simple but effective self-defense techniques. As students progress, they acquire a vast array of skills that can be employed to ward off attackers.

Traditional Tae Kwon Do is a martial art, with the emphasis on art. Yet every move one practices has a self-defense application.

Perhaps the best thing Tae Kwon Do teaches about self-defense is simply to avoid conflict whenever possible. With the self-confidence gained from Tae Kwon Do, one’s poise and judgment are enhanced. Students are less likely to be attacked and more likely to walk away from potentially dangerous confrontations.

There are many other reasons for adults to study Tae Kwon Do, including the joy of friendly competition and the desire to do something of value with your children.
